Introduction
God is very clear in the Bible that witchcraft, sorcery, astrology, mediums, occult, wizardry, etc. are not tolerated. All this stuff leads to very bad outcomes. Over the next few sections I will go over what the Bible says about all this wicked stuff. It is my hope that once you see what God has to say about it, you will stop supporting things like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Marvel, astrology, psychics, tarot cards, lucky charms, fortune tellers, etc.
God’s Direct Commands
First, lets look at a few of God’s direct commands NOT to partake in witchcraft. In Leviticus 19:31 God makes it very clear that you defile yourself if you turn to witchcraft:
31 Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.
God even commands you to disregard them. I don’t know about you, but I try not to disobey a direct command by God nor do I try to go against His advice telling me that I will defile myself if I do something.
Here is another command from Leviticus 19:
26 Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood: neither shall ye use enchantment, nor observe times.
God says do not use enchantments. No enchantment stones, idols, lucky charms, etc. Do not observe times means there are no lucky days or hours. Stop practicing superstition of any kind. It’s of the devil and God commands you against doing it.
Next, here is God literally saying witchcraft is a sin in 1 Samuel 15:
23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
I don’t know what more you need to see to understand that witchcraft is a sin. God literally says it is one! There is nothing cute or fun about it. There is no such thing as a good witch. It is sin. Period!
Sure, if you practice witchcraft you can be forgiven if you believe in Jesus, but God clearly does not want you to partake in it. So why would you? Just because you can be forgiven for murdering someone; Would you go murder someone? Of course not.
How Has God Judged Witchcraft In The Past?
Not only has God told us directly not to partake in witchcraft, but He gave us some examples on how he deals with people that do witchcraft practices. In Isaiah 47 he gives a very poignant message about what He thinks about witchcraft:
9 But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.
Read that verse again to let it sink in. This verse is talking about Babylon and God just told them He’s going to kill their children and husbands because of their multitude of sorceries and abundance of enchantments.
Next, in case you didn’t get it, God says they will be desolated:
11 Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.
Next, God mocks them for their witchcraft. He tells them to have their fortune tellers, astrologers, enchanters save them:
12 Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.
13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.
After God mocks them, He tells them exactly what is going to happen to all of their occult members:
14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.
15 Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.
Present Day Evils Of Witchcraft
Lest you think that witchcraft isn’t still dangerous today, lets look at a present day example of witchcraft from the following article titled, “Ex-Psychic’s Alarming Warning to Parents About Witchcraft, Evil, and the Occult: ‘Shows How Deceptive the Devil Is.”
In this article, an ex-psychic warns that using witchcraft of any type opens you up to demons. She warns that this stuff attracts evil and it’s hard to disagree with her given what we read in the Bible about the stuff.
Nizza said people mistakenly think there is power in the crystals but believes, instead, that use of such tools — something precluded throughout Scripture — attracts evil.
There are many articles just like this from former witches, psychics, astrologers, etc. that say the same thing. It’s discouraging that young people are getting sucked into this stuff more and more. The article mentions that 44% of people aged 13 to 25 have engaged with witchcraft already and 22% of them do it weekly! These young people are opening themselves up to demons that want to drag them to hell.
It’s no wonder young people are so caught up in witchcraft with the amount we see of it in our culture. Harry Potter, Marvel, and Lord of the Rings are huge drivers of this. Those books/movies/games encourage casting spells and magic. These also happen to be the most popular form of entertainment our culture has today. They always have the concept of a good wizard/witch. That doesn’t exist. It’s all evil.
Parting Shots
In no way is this article an exhaustive list of the sin of witchcraft from the Bible. There are many, many more verses about it and none of them are good. God is very clear on this subject and we would be wise to listen to Him.
The culture we currently live in glorifies witches, wizards, sorcery, superstitions, lucky charms, etc. However, do not be deceived. All of this stuff has the potential to drag you straight down to hell for eternity. It’s best to stay away from it. Throw all that stuff away if you have it in your house. I’ll leave you with this warning from God about where witches end up.
8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
-Revelation 21:8
